Double Click Test
Two deliberate clicks a second apart should never register as a double. This test prints the exact millisecond gap between every pair of clicks - so a worn switch has nowhere to hide.
Double click test
Click the pad twice, fast. Every pair under 500 ms counts as one double click and the exact gap is printed in milliseconds - useful when a switch is double-firing on its own.

Reading your results
Healthy mouse: clicking once per second produces singles only - the gap list shows 800-1000+ ms entries and the double counter stays at zero.
Worn switch: single clicks show up as pairs with tiny gaps - typically 2-20 ms. A gap under 50 ms on a slow, deliberate single press is switch bounce, and it will get worse. Re-run the test after gaming sessions: heat and humidity make marginal switches noticeably bouncier.
False positives: if you click fast on purpose, the tool correctly reports doubles - that is the feature working. Test singles slowly; test your real double-click speed separately.
From symptom to decision
The short path: blow out the switch, re-test, try another USB port and another computer to rule out the driver layer, and only then decide between repair and replacement. The full walkthrough with contact-cleaner technique and switch replacement notes is in the double-clicking fix guide; if the test says the rest of the mouse is healthy, our buying checklist covers what to look for in a replacement without overpaying.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my mouse double-clicking on one press?
Almost always a worn switch. The contact leaf inside fatigues and bounces: one physical press produces two electrical contacts a few milliseconds apart, which the computer reads as a double click. Oxidation and debris cause the same symptom earlier in the switch life.
How is a double click defined here?
Two clicks on the same button within 500 milliseconds - the classic operating-system double-click window. When you are testing a suspected double-firing switch, click slower than once per second: any pair the tool still catches is hardware, not you.
Can a double-clicking mouse be fixed?
Sometimes. Compressed air into the switch and a drop of contact cleaner revive mild cases. Persistent cases need the switch re-soldered or replaced - worth it on a hot-swappable board, marginal on a cheap mouse. The full decision path is in our fix guide below.
Does double-clicking affect games?
Yes - in shooters a double-firing button fires pairs, in MOBAs it issues repeated orders, and in file managers it opens things you meant to select. It is the most game-disrupting mouse fault there is.
Is the 500 ms window adjustable?
Your OS has a double-click speed setting (Windows: mouse properties; macOS: accessibility). This tool keeps the fixed 500 ms standard so results are comparable between machines and over time.
